Gingered Bourbon Smash

We bought our first home about a year ago and I’m still astounded by it at times. Like, really?! I own a home? Insane. Completely insane. But we really do and we really love it. We were pretty insistent on which neighborhood we wanted to live in so we were forced to make concessions on other things. Like all of the other things. No garage? No problem! One bathroom? Less to clean! Cat piss carpet? A unique home fragrance! Half the drywall ripped off due to water damage? Half as much to take down ourselves! Seriously our only requirement was that it was structurally sound and in our neighborhood. Everything else could be overcome.

When we found our home we knew it right away. It was well taken care of (had none of the previously mentioned issues) and in the perfect location. The only thing is that it is a little dated and by a little dated I mean 100 percent wood paneled, pink and green floral valences, a mauve toilet, swan etched shower doors, and, best of all, fiery red orange shag carpet in the master bedroom. I mean the previous owner had serious style but it’s just not our style. Lucky for me I have a super talented, handy family and we’ve been renovating bits and pieces whenever we can. The shag carpet was the first to go –  there could have been a family of mice living in it and I would have had no idea.

Currently we’re working on converting the basement to a floral studio and need to get it done before wedding season so we are tackling projects every night and weekend. If you need to find us check Home Depot first. With so much work going on I find it incredibly important to take a few moments to relax even when shit feels crazy. Enter my old friend Bourbon.  It’s hard not to relax and have a good time when enjoying some delicious Kentucky whiskey. When you reach for bourbon you don’t want to fuss with it too much which is why I love a good smash. A little sweet, a little sour and definitely boozy. This Gingered Bourbon Smash is made with ginger simple syrup so you also get the perfect bite. All in all a nice cocktail to sip on a warm spring day like today. Cheers!

Gingered Bourbon Smash

Makes 1

2 oz Bourbon
1/2 oz Ginger Simple Syrup (see below)
1/2 oz Lemon Juice
5 Mint Leaves

For the Ginger Simple Syrup
4 oz Ginger
4 cups Water
2 cups Sugar

First make the ginger simple syrup. Slice the ginger into thin rounds – no need to peel it. Combine the ginger, water and sugar in a saucepan and bring to a boil. Lower the heat and let simmer for 30 minutes. Remove from the heat and let cool for 10 minutes. Strain the syrup and let it cool completely.

To make the smash muddle the mint leaves and then add in the ginger symple syrup, lemon juice and bourbon. Give it a good stir and then add your ice. Garnish with a little extra mint and a lemon slice.
